The Evening South Africa Comes to No.82

Marguerite Mornet has spent more than thirty years knowing South Africa from the inside. She grew up with the safari industry in the family, lodges her people managed in the Greater Kruger, a husband who worked the bush as a game ranger and guide. On 25 June, she brings that lifetime of the country to a single table at No.82.

We have wanted to host this evening for a while. Not a themed dinner, and not a sales night dressed as one. An evening of South African food, wine and stories, in the company of someone who can tell you what the light does over the vineyards at the end of the day because she has stood in it. The particulars we are keeping for the night itself. What we can tell you is who is hosting, and that is the part that matters.

A warmly lit boutique interior set for an intimate supper, candles and laid linen, soft evening light.

The Host

Marguerite is South African, based on the West Coast near Cape Town, and she has built curated safari and wine experiences across the continent for more than three decades. Her favourite destination, after all of it, is still her own country. Her favourite animal is the elephant. These are small things, but they tell you the kind of evening this will be. It is hosted by a person, not a brand.

A specialist host changes a room. The stories are firsthand. The recommendations come from years rather than brochures. And the country arrives in the room a little ahead of any trip anyone might take.

'It is hosted by a person, not a brand.'

The Evening

The room at No.82 is small, which is the point. Supper clubs here are intimate by design, a handful of people around good food and better company, the lights low and the evening unhurried. Expect specialist South African cuisine and wine, and expect to leave knowing the country a little better than you did.

We are holding the rest back on purpose. Some evenings are better entered than explained.
