Where August Still Has Room

A small, quiet Mediterranean cove with clear water and a few rocks, no crowd, warm late-summer light.

Southern Europe will take 11.71 per cent of the world's summer travel intent this year, more than any other region, and up more than two points in a single year. Barcelona leads the searching, at just over one per cent of all global demand on its own, with Athens close behind and rising fastest of any city in the region, according to the Data Appeal Company. The map of where everyone wants to go has rarely been this concentrated.

That concentration is the whole story for August. When demand pools this heavily onto the same handful of coasts and cities, those are the places that fill first and hold their prices hardest. The data is usually read as a list of where to go. Read the other way, it is a map of where the room has already gone, and, by elimination, where it has not.

Why Everyone Is Pointing the Same Way

There is a sensible reason the crowd has narrowed. With long-haul air corridors facing rerouting, higher costs and uncertainty, demand is reorganising towards the places that feel closer and more familiar. Greece, Spain and Italy are the safe, known, easy answer, and in a nervous year a great many people are giving the same answer at once.

'Read the other way, the data is a map of where the room has already gone.'

None of that makes those places any less lovely. It simply means the famous stretches of them are where the squeeze is worst in the peak weeks, and where you are most likely to be told the good rooms are gone.

A small quiet fishing harbour with a few wooden boats and still water, soft late-afternoon light, almost no people.

Where the Room Is

Here is the useful part, and it follows directly from the same numbers. If the demand is pointing hardest at the headline coasts and the three or four cities everyone searches, the space in August is in the places it is not pointing. The quieter island next to the famous one. The secondary stretch of a coast whose star town is booked solid. The inland hour that most people skip on their way to the sea. The shoulder of a popular region rather than its centre.

'The space in August is in the places the crowd is not pointing.'

These are not consolation prizes. Very often they are the better holiday, the version of a region that still behaves like itself in August because the coach parties never found it. Knowing which quieter place sits beside which busy one, and which still has genuine room, is most of what we do at this time of year.

A quiet inland Mediterranean landscape of olive groves and low hills at golden hour, no people, no buildings.

The Honest Picture

This is where a boutique earns its keep over a search bar. We can see, across the suppliers we work with, what is genuinely still open for August and what is not, and we will tell you plainly. If the place you had in mind is gone, we will say so, and point you at the quieter neighbour that is very likely better anyway.

Come in and let us give you the honest picture, while there is still a good version of August left to book.
