The Flight Now, the Room Later
International summer airfares are running around a fifth higher than last year, and airlines raise them further as departure nears. The airfare data behind Points Path puts the increase at twenty-two per cent on international summer routes, with peak dates higher still, and blames the cost of fuel. The flight is the one part of a trip that reliably gets dearer the longer you leave it. The hotel, oddly, often does the opposite.
That split is the answer to the question everyone asks us at this point in the summer. Book now, or wait for a better price. It has been the thread running through this month's Travel Intelligence, and here at the end of it, the honest reply is that a holiday is not one booking but two, and the two do not follow the same rule.

The Flight: Book Now
Flights reward the early and punish the patient. Airlines price by demand and by proximity, and both are working against you as summer fills and the date approaches. Waiting on a fare in a rising market is a bet you are likely to lose twice, once on price and once on the seats worth having. For anything international this autumn, the sensible window is three to six months out, which for the back half of the year means about now.
'Flights reward the early and punish the patient.'
There is no clever play here, no fare that appears if you hold your nerve. The number on the flight is the clearest signal in the whole trip, and it is pointing one way.

The Hotel: It Can Wait
Hotels behave almost backwards. The 2026 Hotel Price Index from Hotels.com found that last-minute bookers saved around a fifth against those who booked four months or more ahead, with the sweet spot landing eight to fourteen days before travel. A hotel with an empty room the week before would often rather discount it than lose it, which is the opposite of how a nearly full flight behaves.
So on the face of it the rule is simple. Lock the flight early, leave the room late, and let the two markets each do what they do.

The Exception That Governs August
Except that this is where the whole month closes its loop. The hotel-can-wait logic only holds where there is a room left to discount. For the specific place you want, in the peak weeks, availability runs out long before the late deals appear, and a saving on a room you cannot get is no saving at all.
This is the thread from the start of the month. The good rooms go first. Waiting works for a flexible stay in a place with plenty of beds, and fails for the sea-view room in the village everyone wants in August. The room can wait only when losing it would not matter.
'Waiting works for a flexible stay, and fails for the one room you want.'

The Rule We Give
So the recommendation we give, to close the summer on, is a short one. Book the flight now, always. Book the hotel now too if it is a specific room you have set your heart on in a busy place. Wait on the hotel only when your dates are flexible, the place is quiet, and losing the room would cost you nothing but the search.
That is the whole of it, and it is a judgement that is easier made with someone who watches both markets every day. Come in and we will tell you which half of your trip to lock tonight, and which half can keep.
